"We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution," is a yearly competition for American high schools students focusing on Constitutional issues. After winning the regional competition in January, the East Grand Rapids High School team will go on to compete in Washington, D.C. Students from the team will present some of their work.

Mayor Cindy Bartman will accept the 2007 Civil Libertarian of the Year Award on behalf of the City of East Grand Rapids. Following communications with the ACLU in 2006, the city rescinded a local ordinance that had compromised the ability of residents to protest visits by the Vice President and President of the United States in 2006 and 2007.
